Free TikTok analytics: everything TikTok hands you for nothing, and how to read it
The best free TikTok analytics tool is the one already in the app, and most creators use a tenth of it. This is a guide to the whole thing — where it lives, what each tab measures, the 60-day wall, the two ways to calculate engagement rate and the 2026 benchmarks to hold your numbers against — plus an honest note on what the “free” third-party tools and APIs can and cannot see.

Where the free analytics live
TikTok’s analytics are free for every account. The old requirement to switch to a Pro, Creator or Business account is gone — the panels sit behind Profile → Menu → TikTok Studio → Analytics in the app, and at tiktok.com/tiktokstudio on the desktop, where the tables are wider and the CSV export lives. Business accounts see the same analytics plus commercial features (the Business Suite, a website link, commercial-sounds-only music). Switching is free and reversible, but it is not what unlocks the data.
Analytics appear once you have posted at least one video, and the dashboard starts counting from that day. There is no back-fill, which is the first reason to switch them on before you need them.
The four tabs and what each one is for
| Tab | What it shows | The one number to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Overview | Video views, profile views, likes, comments, shares and follower change over 7, 28, 60 days or a custom range | The video-views trend line against your posting days — gaps in one explain dips in the other |
| Content | Every post from the last 7 days plus trending posts, each with views, likes, comments, shares, average watch time, full-video watch rate, traffic sources and audience territories | Average watch time and watched full video % — the two retention metrics the For You feed rewards |
| Followers | Total followers, net growth, gender split, top territories, hours and days your followers are active, and what else they watched and searched | Active hours — the only data-backed answer to “when should I post” |
| LIVE | Live views, new followers from lives, diamonds and total time — only if you have gone live in the window | Viewers per hour, if LIVE matters to you at all |
Per-video metrics, and the retention curve that matters most
Tap any video in the Content tab and the per-post view opens: total views, likes, comments, shares, saves, average watch time, the percentage who watched to the end, new followers from that video, and a retention graph — the share of viewers still watching at each second. Below it, traffic sources splits views between the For You feed, your profile, Following, search, sound pages and external links, and audience territories lists the countries.
The retention graph is the most useful chart on TikTok and the least looked at. The shape tells you more than any single number:
- A cliff in the first two seconds means the hook failed — the visual or the first words did not earn the third second. Fix the opening, not the video.
- A steady slope is normal; a slope that flattens into a plateau means the people who stayed were the right people. Make more for them.
- A drop at a specific second marks the moment you lost them — often a cut to a talking head, a slow reveal or a caption that gave away the ending.
- Full-video rate above the account’s average on a short clip is the strongest single signal the algorithm is about to test the video with a wider audience.
Traffic sources are the second most useful panel. A healthy account that is growing sees most views from For You. A video whose views come mainly from your profile is one your existing audience liked but the feed did not distribute — usually a hook problem, occasionally a topic the feed cannot classify.
Engagement rate: the two formulas and why they disagree
Every benchmark report publishes an “average TikTok engagement rate”, and they disagree by a factor of two because they divide by different things.
| Formula | How it is calculated | Typical 2026 reading | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| By views | (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ views × 100 | 3.85% median (Socialinsider, Q2 2026) | Judging a video on its own merits — the feed showed it to strangers, did they act |
| By followers | (likes + comments + shares) ÷ followers × 100 | Around 2–2.6%, and falling year on year | Comparing accounts of similar size; the number most paid tools show |
By-views always reads higher on TikTok than on Instagram because TikTok shows videos to non-followers by default, so the denominator is honest about who actually saw it. By-followers is inherited from Instagram-era reporting and punishes accounts whose videos travel — a 5,000-follower account with a 200,000-view video will show a by-followers engagement rate in the hundreds of percent, which means nothing.
2026 benchmarks by follower tier
Socialinsider’s 2026 TikTok benchmark, calculated by views across accounts it tracks, puts the tiers surprisingly close together — small accounts lead, but not by the margin they did two years ago:
| Followers | Engagement rate by views (2025 data) | Median views per post | Posting frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1K–5K | 4.40% | ≈350, down sharply year on year | Rising |
| 5K–10K | 4.00% | — | Rising |
| 10K–50K | 3.90% | — | Rising |
| 50K–100K | 3.75% | — | Rising |
| 100K–1M | 3.95% | ≈34,900, up 39% | 23 posts a month, up from 15 |
Two things in that table are more interesting than the engagement column. Median views for the smallest accounts fell while views for large accounts rose, which is consistent with the feed concentrating distribution. And every tier posted roughly 40% more often in 2025 than in 2024 — the large accounts went from a post every other day to nearly one a day. Read your own Overview trend against that: flat views on a flat posting schedule is the feed asking for more, not a shadow ban.
The free APIs, and what they refuse to show
Three official routes exist, and none of them is the “free TikTok analytics on any account” that a lot of tools imply.
| API | Who can use it | What it returns | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display API | Any developer with an approved app, on behalf of a user who signs in through Login Kit | The user’s own profile and videos with view, like, comment and share counts | Your own account only. It cannot look up anyone else |
| Research API | Qualifying academic and non-profit institutions in the US, EEA, UK, Switzerland and Brazil | Public video, comment and account data for research queries | Commercial use is not eligible, and eligibility narrowed further in 2025–26 |
| Business / Marketing API | TikTok for Business accounts and advertisers | Ad performance, business account insights, Spark Ads | Built for advertising, not organic analytics |
The practical consequence: a “free TikTok analytics tool” that shows you your own numbers is using the Display API and is fine. One that promises free analytics on competitor or influencer accounts is either scraping — which breaks TikTok’s terms and tends to stop working without notice — or reselling a licensed data provider, which is not free for long. Competitor tracking in the reputable paid tools is their real product, and the price reflects the licence.
A free monthly routine that beats most paid dashboards
- 1Export the Overview CSV
Desktop TikTok Studio → Analytics → set the range to the previous month → Download data. Drop it in a folder. This is the history the app throws away after 60 days.
- 2Log your 20 most recent posts
Views, likes, comments, shares, saves, average watch time, full-watch rate and the For You share of traffic. A spreadsheet row per post. Fifteen minutes.
- 3Compute engagement by views and rank by retention
Sort by full-watch rate, not by views. The top five tell you what to make more of; the bottom five, with their retention graphs, tell you where the hook failed.
- 4Check follower active hours and adjust the schedule
The Followers tab shows the hours and days your audience is on. Move your posting slots onto them and hold them for a month before judging.
- 5Compare to the tier benchmark
Against the table above, in the same formula. Below tier: retention problem. At tier with flat views: frequency problem. Above tier with flat views: distribution — check the For You share.
Where PostMCP fits
PostMCP does not post to TikTok and has no analytics module, so it is not a TikTok analytics tool and this page is not a pitch for one. What it does do is take the same vertical video you make for TikTok and publish or schedule it as a YouTube Short, an Instagram Reel and a Threads or Bluesky post from one queue, with per-network copy written to fit — 20 posts a month on the free plan. If your TikTok analytics tell you a video worked, that is the cheapest way to give it three more audiences.
Frequently asked questions
Are TikTok analytics free?+
Yes, for every account. They are in TikTok Studio under Analytics, in the app and at tiktok.com/tiktokstudio, and no longer require switching to a Business or Creator account. Business accounts get the same analytics plus commercial features.
How far back do TikTok analytics go?+
Sixty days at most in the dashboard, and the per-post list in the Content tab covers the last seven. Data starts accumulating from your first post with no back-fill. To keep longer history, export the Overview CSV from the desktop Studio each month.
What is a good engagement rate on TikTok in 2026?+
Calculated by views, Socialinsider’s 2026 benchmark puts the median at 3.85% and the follower tiers between 3.75% and 4.40%. Over your last 20 posts, 2–4% is typical, 4–6% is good and above 6% is strong. Calculated by followers the figures run lower, around 2–2.6%, and are less meaningful on TikTok because most views come from non-followers.
Which TikTok metric matters most for growth?+
Retention: average watch time and the percentage who watched the full video, both in the per-video view. The For You feed distributes videos that hold attention, so a full-watch rate above your account average is the earliest signal a video will travel. Views and likes follow from it.
Can a free tool show me analytics for other TikTok accounts?+
Not through official means. TikTok’s Display API returns data only for the account that signed in, and the Research API is restricted to academic and non-profit institutions in five regions. Tools offering free competitor analytics are scraping or reselling licensed data, and the free part rarely lasts.
Do I need a TikTok Business account for analytics?+
No. Analytics are available on personal accounts through TikTok Studio. A Business account adds the Business Suite, a clickable website link and commercial-licensed music only, and restricts you to that commercial sound library — a real cost for many creators.
Does PostMCP schedule TikTok posts?+
Not currently. PostMCP publishes to YouTube Shorts, Instagram, Threads, Bluesky, X, LinkedIn and Facebook. The same vertical video you post to TikTok can be scheduled to those from one queue, with 20 free posts a month.
